Stomach-friendly Coffee: A less acidic experience for your tummy

Posted on June 14, 2021

There is nothing like enjoying a divine cup of coffee; for most it is bliss, but, if you are someone with a sensitive stomach, it can be a bane. This blog is by no means a drawn-out science lecture, but it may help you find a more ‘stomach-friendly’ coffee if your tummy has a bad relationship with the beloved beverage.

The discomfort caused by coffee may either be due to sensitivity to caffeine or the acidity in coffee, or by increased gastric (stomach) acid secretion brought on by the caffeine.

The secretion of gastric acid is normal; however, caffeine may trigger increased acid secretion, especially in those with sensitivities. There, however, alternatives to ease this blues.

The Dark Roast Alternative

If you think that the acidity in coffee may be the problem, switching to a darker roast might be the right cup for you. Research shows that coffee beans that were roasted for longer and at higher temperatures were less acidic and easier on the stomach.

The Decaffe Alternative

Switching to decaffe may be an option if you feel that caffeine may be the culprit, but it still contains the acidic element to it. Kicking the caffeine is also never an easy feat.

Additional Options

If you find that coffee upsets your stomach, you could also consider the way you drink it, such as switching from regular milk to soy or almond milk. Additionally, cutting out additives such as cream, sugar, and sweeteners could also be an option. If you do have a sweet tooth, you could try honey as an alternative.

If you would like to try a darker roast, we recommend the Nespresso® compatible Signature Dark Roast, or the Lavazza Blue® compatible Euphoria.

If trying a decaffe is what you might need, then we recommend the Nespresso® compatible Signature Decaffe, Italian Coffee Decaffe or the Nescafé® Dolce Gusto® compatible Gimoka Soave Decaffe.

And if coffee is just not your thing, here is some amazing caffeine-free alternatives and superfoods which will ensure that you find a new favourite beverage.
