How To Get The Most Out of Your Compatible Coffee Capsules

Posted on September 17, 2026

You've got the machine, you've got the capsules but are you actually getting the best cup possible out of them? A few small habits separate an "okay, that'll do" coffee from a genuinely great one. Here's everything you need to know to get more out of every single pod.

How do you use compatible coffee capsules correctly?

Getting a great cup starts before the capsule even goes in. A few habits make all the difference:

  • Let your machine fully heat up first. Most machines will let you brew before they've reached temperature, but that first pour will always be weaker and cooler than it should be. Wait for the ready light.
  • Run a blank pour before your first capsule of the day — just water, no pod. This flushes out anything sitting in the lines overnight and warms the brew head properly, so your first real cup doesn't taste flat or lukewarm.
  • Seat the capsule properly and close the lever fully. A capsule that's not clicked or locked in is the number one cause of a weak, watery cup. The machine can't pierce and extract it properly if it's sitting off-centre.
  • Match the cup size to the capsule. A lungo capsule brewed on an espresso setting (or vice versa) will never taste balanced.
  • Don't leave a used capsule sitting in the chamber. Once you've had your coffee, eject it and let it drop straight into the capsule basket rather than leaving it in the brew head. Capsules left in place can affect the seal on your next brew and, over time, contribute to the same mineral and coffee-oil buildup that leads to a machine needing an early descale.

Get these right and you'll notice the difference in the cup and your machine will thank you for it too.

Can you reuse a coffee capsule?

We wouldn't recommend it. Once a capsule's been brewed, the grounds are spent and the seal's broken, so a second go just gives you hot, vaguely coffee-flavoured water. Your tastebuds (and your machine) deserve better than a watery repeat performance. One capsule, one proper cup.

Does using compatible capsules damage your machine?

Good-quality compatible capsules are made to match your machine's piercing mechanism and pressure specs, so they shouldn't cause any extra wear when used properly. If your machine is slowing down or your coffee's tasting a bit flat, the real culprit is almost always mineral buildup from water and not the capsule brand.

How often should you clean and descale your machine?

Every 1–3 months, depending on how hard your local water is and how often you're brewing. Skip this and you'll notice it, slower pours, dodgy temperature and coffee that just tastes "off." A quick wipe of the capsule holder and drip tray after each use goes a long way too, since coffee oils build up faster than you'd think. For the actual descale, generic household descalers aren't built for capsule machines, our Caffenu range is, and it makes the job painless.
